AI & Finance™ | News for the Week Ending 8/22/25

5535

Here we are thinking about our future again.

Welcome to another week of AI & Finance, and of course there’s a ton of AI stuff to sift through and we’re going to get you right to it.

But first, we mused in recent columns about the darkly clouded futures of digital publishing, journalism and digital marketing—this week we’re musing about the future of education.

Or maybe we’re thinking more about the present of education, where plenty of students, from the college level on down to grade schools, are copping to the use of AI to assist or cheat on assigned work. For teachers and administrators, it has become such a problem that AI is being deployed to detect work that was actually completed by AI.

To us, the cheating controversy kind of glosses over the real point—AI is rendering the kind of education we’re offering to our children obsolete, and our kids already know it.

For one thing, there’s a functional issue. Kind of like how Gen X and millennials found that calculators and personal computers were doing at their fingertips a lot of the math they were being taught in schools, and millennials and Gen Z found that the internet provided at their fingertips a lot of the general knowledge they were being taught in school, Gen Z and “gen alpha” are now finding that AI is providing at their fingertips a lot of the analytical, writing and critical thinking skills that they are being taught in schools.

It’s not at all clear to today’s children why they should learn how to diagram a sentence or write coherently—or even organize their thoughts—when they can ask a chatbot to write or organize their thoughts for them, pretty much instantly. And frankly, to the employer of the future, a worker who knows how to work deftly with AI may be more valuable than one who is retaining a ton of wrote academic knowledge.

Then, when we get to higher levels of education, it’s not always clear at this point what we should be training our young people for. I entered adulthood a firm believer in a liberal education—that young people through the early stages of adulthood should be broadly educated and allowed to develop individual intellectual skills rather than focusing on a specific trade of career, and that choosing a career should come later.

Heck, I was in my late 20s before choosing to become a professional journalist—my first degree was in political science, and I was a firm believer that the arts and sciences and the humanities were the highest ideal of learning available to students at the time. The discipline we were learning was how to think, and we could apply our skills and knowledge to a cornucopia of careers.

Now that sounds a little naive and silly—with AI poised to take over a good portion of the reasoning human beings are responsible for, why are we bothering centering a paid college education around teaching our students how to think for themselves? Today’s young people are seeking purpose and guidance through technology, not academic programs that purport to teach them how to find purpose and guidance for themselves. That’s an important distinction.

A liberal education isn’t obsolete, but it’s quickly fading in importance in the face of new technologies.

Let’s get to your headlines.
