THE LEAD: What’s Up, Or In, This Week

334

Big week? You bet. Finally, this week will end with (wait for it)… government economic numbers. Oh, the government is still shut down, but somehow, someway, the CPI (Consumer Price Index) got calculated and will be announced Friday. But no jobs report. What’s up with that?

So, what is up or “in” this week? Let’s begin with those economic numbers… or lack of. The government shutdown took effect the first of this month (Oct. 1), and the September jobs report was due to be released two days later on Friday. But NO. Even though the report was ready for release, the White House said no, blaming the shutdown. However, the CPI will be released this Friday even with the shutdown. What’s up? Just speculating, but it may be the job numbers are bad and the inflation numbers are mild. Remember, the next Fed meeting is next week (28th–29th), and NOTHING will get in the way of an interest rate cut. Again, what’s up this week? Subtle manipulation. There, I said it.

How about what’s in this week. Sadly, the war in Gaza is back IN. Yes, there is a ceasefire in effect (?) and hostages have been released but… about that disarmament. Hamas is supposed to give up its guns and weapons, but scattered around Gaza there are a few fighters that just can’t resist a few more shots and killings. Of course, there are similar numbers of Israeli soldiers who can justify a few more Hamas guys in their sights. That “paused war” may become more and more IN all week.

A once-a-year occurrence also happens this week. A turning point (no, not Charlie Kirk) as it were. Sports. This week the baseball World Series begins Friday, which signals the end of the baseball season. Baseball hands off to the NBA (basketball) to begin their season Tuesday. Football is mid-season too. So, baseball—which should be a summer sport—hands off to basketball—which should be a winter sport—while football, which should be a fall sport, is in full swing. Now that’s what’s really IN this week.

It’s also a week where nothing is OUT. Bull market IN. Tariff talk IN. Wars (Russia/Ukraine & Mideast) IN. Sports on TV IN. Jobs numbers IN, just not available for public view. Government shutdown IN. Disbelieving the move in gold and stocks IN.
