AI EDUCATION: What is Llama 3?


Publisher’s Note: In our ongoing effort to educate our readers about everything AI, what’s out there, and how it can be used, we select a weekly topic to delve into in our ongoing AI EDUCATION series.  This week, we’re exploring Llama 3, yet another large language model AI, this time from the (admittedly controversial) folks at Meta. We also used Llama 3 for researching this piece, and we learned quite a bit in the process about this latest, greatest LLM AI, which we share with you in the post.  Check it out below!

The field of artificial intelligence has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years, with Large Language Models (LLMs) being at the forefront of this revolution. LLMs have transformed the way we interact with machines, enabling them to understand and respond to human language in a more natural and intuitive way. Among the latest developments in this space is Llama 3, a cutting-edge LLM designed to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI language processing. In this article, we will delve into what Llama 3 is, its capabilities, and how it compares to other LLMs from industry giants like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google.

What is Llama 3?

Llama 3 is a Large Language Model developed by Meta AI, which of course, is the team behind Facebook.  In mid-April, Meta did a major media blitz around its Llama 3 AI, whicis a type of transformer-based language model, meaning it uses a specific architecture to process and generate human-like language. This model is trained on a massive dataset of text from various sources, including books, articles, and websites, allowing it to learn patterns and relationships in language.

Capabilities of Llama 3

Some of the key features of Llama 3 include:
  • Text Generation: Llama 3 can generate high-quality text on a given prompt or topic, making it suitable for tasks like content creation, chatbots, and language translation
    In fact, we used Llama 3 for this content piece.  From what we could tell, Llama 3 seemed faster than ChatGPT and CoPilot in outputting content from our query, but we didn’t see any major difference in the output, except that it seemed much more promotional, so we had to do more editing to keep it more neutral in tone for our readers.
  • Conversational AI: Llama 3’s ability to understand and respond to natural language inputs makes it a viable option for building conversational AI systems.
  • Question Answering: The model can process and answer complex questions, making it useful for applications like search engines and knowledge bases.
  • Text Classification: Llama 3 can classify text into categories like spam/not spam, positive/negative sentiment, and more.


Comparison with other LLMs

Llama 3 is not the only LLM on the market, and it faces competition from other industry players. Here’s a brief comparison with other notable LLMs:
  • Microsoft’s Bing LLM: Microsoft’s Bing LLM is another prominent LLM that has gained significant attention. While it has similar capabilities to Llama 3, its training data and architecture differ.
  • OpenAI’s GPT-4: OpenAI’s GPT-4 is a widely used LLM known for its exceptional text generation capabilities. However, its training data is limited to 2021, whereas Llama 3 has been trained on more recent data. (Publisher’s note – we knew this was true for Chat GPT-3, but it’s our understanding that more recent versions of Chat GPT-4 can access more current data, and that has been our experience in using that tool as well in using that tool for content research So this is why you need to research content output from ALL these LLMs for accuracy, at least as of April 2024.)
  • Google’s PaLM 2: Google’s PaLM 2 is a powerful LLM with a unique architecture. While it excels in certain tasks, its capabilities differ from Llama 3 in some areas.
Llama 3 represents a significant milestone in the development of Large Language Models. Its capabilities and performance make it an attractive option for various applications, from content creation to conversational AI. While it faces competition from other LLMs, its unique architecture and training data set it apart. And btw, we left this closing sentence  without editing – see what we mean about it being so much more promotional?  Of course, it’s promoting itself!
As the field of AI continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how Llama 3 and other LLMs shape the future of human-AI interaction.
