Now that we're officially post-Labor Day, we're looking at the top 5 largest fintech deals of the summer, and there have been some whoppers. To give you a perspective, the LOWEST funding level in this Top 5 list for the summer was a $500M Series G for equity management system Carta. The top deal came in at $1B+ (yes, "B") for NC-based financial reporting software firm insightsoftware.

This week's roundup of the Top 5 VC deals in digital wealth leaves several $100M+ deals off the list. Here we are again, with every deal in excess of $100M and three offshore.

This past week we again saw some MIGHTY deals in the digital wealth sector, with every one over $200M USD, and so many in that category that we couldn't include others in the $100M-$200M USD range this week's Top 5 list. Shocking, isn't it?

Financial technology continues to attract legacy finance players. Fintech IPO roadshows have gone digital, while big banks are also riding the digital wave. The IMF wants to know if CBDCs are the solution for the unbanked population, and Elon Musk is back on the good side of bitcoin investors.

As I reviewed our columns going back to the first of the year, it was abundantly evident that the deal sizes have ratcheted up as the year has progressed. I'll also admit, it felt weird to leave out deals in the $500M - $600M range. But those did not make the list, incredibly.

This week, 3 of the top 5 deals were international - out of South Korea, Holland and China; The Chinese deal received funding from a Canadian teacher's pension fund - we thought that was interesting and rather unusual; In America, the two firms who made our list this week were in auto finance and wealthtech - two strong areas of financing in our country.

A bevy of deal activity kept the fintech space in the spotlight once again. The pipeline of startups set to hit the public markets after Marqeta made a splash on the Nasdaq last week is building, and SPACs are still hot to trot. Payments platform Stripe has launched its own AI-fueled identity product, while the buy now, pay later trend continues to gain momentum.

Fintech firms are hitting on all cylinders lately, making a splash in some of the trendiest deals in the capital markets and helping to shape the financial industry of the future. In fact, one of the mega IPOs of the year so far involves a payment technology unicorn that is about to become a household name. Whether it’s real estate opportunities, SPAC deals or digital currencies, financial technology companies ranging from mobile banking startups to payments platforms are setting the pace.
