More big money passed hands this past week as we were driving across America from Atlanta to our new home in Bozeman, MT, including an $800M USD deal for a POS retail loan processor and a $400M USD for a Brazilian challenger bank serving South America.

The fintech VC spigot continues to burst, with all five deals in our listing this week, again continuing to exceed $100M. This seems to be an ongoing trend for the sector, as the money continues to flow.

This week, we had some MAMMOTH deals in VC in the fintech sector, with three of the five based in the US, and the other two in London and Vietnam. Also, this week saw some VERY big funding rounds. If this is indicative of what 2021 holds in the fintech VC arena, now that we are officially back at work post-holiday season, we're in for some whopper deals. I wouldn't be surprised if we something at $1B or more at this point.

Fintech venture deals surged in the first and second weeks of January, with several mega-deals occurring in the US offshore. India, Germany and the Philippines each saw deals closing in excess of $100M USD within the fintech sector and two US deals rounded out the top 5 for this past week.

With the holidays, closings of deals the last week were a little "shy" but we did see activity the week leading up to Christmas, and since we did a 2020 trend piece on the fintech venture sector last week, we thought we'd reach back a little further than usual for this week's "weekly" report.

The year is finishing out strong. Now there's a statement you don't often hear when referring to 2020, but the fintech venture capital is still flowing and there were some large deals penned this past week. Three of the top 5 were out of the US, with Paxos - a major crypto trading platform taking the top funding slot, followed closely by OscarHealth, an insurtech focused on health insurance offerings.

This week we saw YET ANOTHER British challenger bank receive funding this past week (gosh, there's a LOT of challenger banks out there now), plus an interesting new teen-based (you guessed it!) challenger bank out of SF. Also in this week's batch were an ATL-based payments app for e-commerce companies, an API platform for retail banking out of Chicago, and a credit card bill payment app out of India.

You would think that with last week's Thanksgiving holiday here in the US, muted as it was due to the pandemic, we would have seen slowed down deal activity in the fintech sector. Turns out that assumption would be WRONG, and we still saw deal closings, believe it or not, with one that topped $300M(!!) and three more topped the $100M+ figure.
